Last week, we did a mold test in Negaunee where the homeowner was terrified about dark spots on their basement wall. The mold was black, so they assumed the worst. When the lab results came back, it turned out to be Cladosporium—one of the most common and least concerning types of household mold. Meanwhile, we’ve found truly dangerous Stachybotrys (the infamous “black mold”) that appeared gray or greenish.

Understanding the different types of household mold matters because each species behaves differently, grows in different conditions, and poses different health risks. In this guide, we’ll help you understand what’s actually growing in Upper Peninsula homes and why professional testing reveals information you can’t get from just looking at mold.

Where We Find It: Cladosporium loves wood surfaces. In the U.P., we frequently find it on:

  • Wood trim and baseboards
  • Wooden floor joists in basements
  • Wood paneling
  • Window frames
  • Deck lumber

What It Looks Like: Usually appears olive-green to brown or black. It can form velvety or powdery patches.

Health Concerns: While Cladosporium is common, it can still cause problems. It’s a known allergen that can trigger:

  • Asthma attacks in those with asthma
  • Allergic reactions including sneezing and congestion

The good news is that Cladosporium is rarely considered a serious health threat for healthy individuals. The bad news is that it indicates moisture problems that could lead to more concerning mold growth.

Upper Peninsula Context: Our region’s wooden homes and cabins create ideal conditions for Cladosporium. Spring moisture from snowmelt often triggers growth in basements and crawl spaces where wooden structural elements get damp.

Aspergillus/Penicillium: The Indoor Duo

These two mold genera are grouped together in testing because their spores look nearly identical under a microscope. Both are extremely common in indoor environments.

Where We Find Them: These types of household mold aren’t picky about surfaces. We find them on:

  • Drywall and wallpaper
  • Carpet and fabric
  • Insulation materials
  • HVAC systems and ductwork
  • Food (yes, that fuzzy blue-green stuff on forgotten leftovers is usually Penicillium)

What They Look Like: Both can appear in various colors—blue, green, white, or gray. Penicillium often has that distinctive blue-green color many people recognize from moldy food.

Health Concerns: These molds deserve respect. Some species of Aspergillus can produce mycotoxins and cause serious health problems, especially for people with weakened immune systems. Aspergillus can cause:

  • Allergic reactions and asthma
  • Lung infections in vulnerable individuals
  • A serious condition called aspergillosis in immune-compromised people

Penicillium is generally less concerning (remember, it’s where penicillin antibiotic comes from), but it can still trigger allergies and respiratory issues.

Why Testing Matters: Because we can’t distinguish between Aspergillus and Penicillium visually, and because Aspergillus species vary widely in toxicity, professional testing becomes crucial. The lab analysis can often narrow down whether you’re dealing with more or less concerning species.

Stachybotrys: The Infamous “Black Mold”

This is the one everyone worries about. Stachybotrys chartarum has earned its reputation as “toxic black mold” because some strains produce mycotoxins that can cause serious health effects.

Where We Find It: Stachybotrys is picky about where it grows. It needs really wet conditions and loves cellulose-rich materials. In our experience inspecting homes in Ishpeming, Negaunee, and throughout the U.P., we find it on:

  • Ceiling tiles (in our experience, about 99% of moldy ceiling tiles are Stachybotrys)
  • Drywall that’s been wet for extended periods
  • Paper backing on drywall
  • Cardboard in damp basements

What It Looks Like: Despite its name, Stachybotrys isn’t always black. It can appear dark green, gray, or black. It typically has a slimy or wet appearance rather than fuzzy or powdery.

Where It Won’t Grow: Here’s something important: we rarely find Stachybotrys growing directly on wood. If you have dark mold on wood surfaces, it’s probably not Stachybotrys.

Health Concerns: Stachybotrys can produce trichothecene mycotoxins, which may cause:

  • Severe respiratory problems
  • Headaches and fatigue
  • Immune system suppression
  • Neurological symptoms in some cases

However, it’s important to note that not all Stachybotrys produces toxins, and exposure doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get sick. The risk depends on the strain, the amount of exposure, and individual sensitivity.

Upper Peninsula Context: Our long winters create perfect conditions for Stachybotrys. Ice dams cause roof leaks that drip onto ceilings. Spring flooding hits basements where cardboard boxes sit on damp floors. The combination of chronic moisture and cellulose materials gives this mold exactly what it needs.

Ascospores: The Outdoor Invader

Ascospores represent a huge group of more than 3,000 different fungi species. They’re primarily outdoor molds, but they make their way indoors constantly.

Where We Find Them: These spores enter homes through:

  • Open windows and doors
  • HVAC systems
  • On clothing and pets
  • Through any opening in the building envelope

What They Look Like: Ascospores vary widely in appearance because they represent so many different species. They can be any color and grow on almost any surface.

Health Concerns: While research on ascospores is limited, many of these types of household mold are likely allergenic. They become especially abundant after rain, which is why some people’s allergies flare up after storms.

Why They Matter in Testing: Finding high levels of ascospores indoors compared to outdoors suggests moisture problems. These fungi are opportunists—they’ll colonize water-damaged materials quickly.

Upper Peninsula Context: Spring and fall rains create ideal conditions for ascospores to flourish outdoors. When we see elevated indoor levels, it usually indicates either poor ventilation or recent water intrusion.

Basidiospores: The Mushroom Family

Basidiospores come from the family of fungi that includes mushrooms and bracket fungi. If you’ve seen shelf fungi growing on trees or mushrooms sprouting after rain, you’ve seen basidiospores in action.

Where We Find Them: Like ascospores, these are primarily outdoor molds that drift indoors. However, when we find elevated indoor levels, it often means:

  • Wood rot in the structure
  • Wet conditions in crawl spaces or basements
  • Outdoor fungi colonizing damp indoor wood

What They Look Like: The spores themselves are invisible, but the fruiting bodies (mushrooms) are easy to spot if they develop indoors—and yes, we’ve seen mushrooms growing in crawl spaces, shed attachments, and even under a sliding door in a lake-facing home in Munising.

Health Concerns: Basidiospores are common allergens and have been linked to hypersensitivity pneumonitis in some cases. For most people, they cause typical allergic symptoms like sneezing and congestion.

Upper Peninsula Context: Our humid summers and wet springs create perfect conditions for basidiospores. When we find elevated indoor levels in Escanaba or Marquette homes, we look carefully at structural wood for rot damage.

Chaetomium: The Water Damage Indicator

When we find Chaetomium in a home, we know there’s been serious, prolonged water damage. This mold doesn’t grow unless conditions are very wet.

Where We Find It: Chaetomium appears on:

  • Severely water-damaged drywall
  • Wet ceiling tiles
  • Water-damaged carpet and fabric
  • Paper products exposed to chronic moisture

What It Looks Like: Chaetomium typically appears white or gray at first, darkening to brown or black as it matures. It often has a cottony texture.

Why It’s Important: Finding Chaetomium tells us the moisture problem is serious and has been ongoing. It’s a red flag that requires immediate attention.

What the Results Tell You:

The lab report identifies:

  • Which specific types of household mold are present
  • The concentration of each type (spore count per cubic meter of air)
  • Whether indoor levels exceed outdoor baseline levels
  • Which molds are water damage indicators

Why Spore Counts Matter:

Spring: The Snowmelt Season

March through May brings our busiest mold inspection season. Snowmelt and spring rains create damp basements and crawl spaces. This is when we most often find:

  • Cladosporium on damp wood in crawl spaces
  • Stachybotrys on water-damaged drywall from ice dam leaks
  • Elevated Chaetomium after flooding events

The Crawl Space Problem

In older U.P. homes, particularly those in Manistique and surrounding communities, we frequently find mold in crawl spaces for one simple reason: no vapor barrier. Soil naturally releases moisture. Without plastic covering the ground, this moisture rises into the crawl space, creating ideal conditions for mold growth on wooden joists and subflooring.
