Last Tuesday, I was inspecting a kitchen during a home inspection in Negaunee when something caught my eye. Because microwave safety is important but often overlooked, we always test built-in microwaves as part of a home inspection. At first glance, this one looked fine—maybe a little dated, but nothing alarming. But look again, and there it was: a rusty brown stain spreading across the right side of the door’s glass.
I grabbed a cloth and tried wiping it off, thinking it might be splattered food or grease. Nothing. The stain wasn’t on the surface—it was in the glass itself, or more accurately, affecting the metal mesh screen behind it. That’s when I knew this was a microwave safety issue, not a matter of cosmetics.
After 15 years in construction and home inspection across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you develop a sense for when something that looks minor is actually a red flag. This was one of those moments.
What We Found

The discoloration appeared as an irregular, blotchy rusty brown stain on the interior glass of the microwave door. It had that “baked-in” look that tells you it’s been developing for a while. The surrounding glass looked clean, which made the affected area stand out even more.
What concerned me most was that this wasn’t surface contamination. The rust appeared to be affecting the electromagnetic shielding mesh—the metal screen you can see behind the glass on every microwave door. That mesh isn’t decorative. It’s there for your safety.
Why Microwave Safety Matters
Here’s something most folks don’t know: that metal mesh behind your microwave door glass is basically a Faraday cage. Its job is to contain microwave radiation inside the cooking chamber where it belongs. When you heat up your coffee, those microwaves need to stay inside the box, not leak into your kitchen.
When rust or corrosion damages this mesh, it compromises that protective barrier. Think of it like a screen door with holes—it can’t do its job properly anymore.
The microwave safety risks of an issue like this aren’t just theoretical:
- Radiation leakage: Damaged shielding may allow microwave radiation to escape. While modern microwaves have multiple safety systems, that door seal and mesh are your primary protection.
- Fire hazard: Rust can lead to arcing—those sparks you sometimes see when metal accidentally gets left in a microwave. These sparks can potentially cause a fire, especially as the damage worsens.
- Electrical problems: Corroded metal can create short circuits or cause uneven heating, affecting how the microwave operates.
The bottom line? Microwave safety. Including built-in microwave ovens in a home inspection isn’t about whether your microwave looks pretty. It’s about whether it’s safe to use.

What Causes Microwave Safety Issues
Our Upper Peninsula climate can be tough on appliances. Our humid summers, especially near the Great Lakes, create ideal conditions for rust and corrosion. But environmental conditions are only one thing that can contribute to microwave safety issues. Here are a few potential causes of this problem:
Moisture exposure: Humidity is the biggest culprit when it comes to home inspection issues in general. So, no surprise that it can also play a role in microwave safety. Steam from cooking, condensation from temperature changes, and high general humidity all contribute. If your microwave is near your stove or in a kitchen without good ventilation, this could affect your appliance in negative ways. However, this is a less likely cause for this case. More common would be to see corrosion on exterior components such as door hinges.
Food particles and spills: Grease and food debris can trap moisture against metal surfaces. Over time, this leads to corrosion of the protective coating on the mesh screen. In this case, the kitchen was clean and the microwave appeared well cared for. But take note: keeping the interior of your microwave clean is an important microwave safety best practice.
Arcing damage: If someone accidentally microwaves aluminum foil or a dish with metallic trim, the resulting sparks can damage the interior coating. Once that protective layer is compromised, rust can develop on the exposed metal.
Age and wear: Older microwaves, especially those manufactured before modern coating standards, are more susceptible. The protective paint or enamel coating can peel or chip from normal use, exposing metal that then rusts.
In this particular Negaunee home, I suspected the combination of an older unit (probably 10+ years), placement near the stove, and possible arcing from metallic objects left in the microwave most likely created the perfect storm for accelerated deterioration.
7 Everyday Microwave Safety Best Practices

Most people view microwaves as simple to use – and they are. But like all household appliances, they should be used with respect. Here are a few microwave safety best practices to follow and share with your loved ones:
1. Always use microwave-safe containers such as Pyrex glass to reheat food. These won’t melt or release harmful chemicals when exposed to microwaves.
2. Keep your microwave clean. Cover food while cooking to prevent splatters. Wipe them up right away if they do happen.
3. Store your microwave where it is easy to use but out of the reach of small children.
4. Don’t microwave sealed containers. This can build up steam and cause the container to explode. Leave those lids ajar!
5. Stir before serving. Microwaves cook food unevenly. This can create pockets of scalding hot food even when other areas are still cool to the touch. Stir to prevent injury, especially when serving warmed-up food to children, pets, and the elderly.
6. Handle with care. Use oven mitts when removing hot food from the microwave. Even though the oven itself stays cool, hot foods and liquids straight from the microwave can cause serious burns.
7. Don’t run on empty. During a home inspection, we run a microwave for just a few seconds to test it. But like they say on TV, don’t do this at home! Running an empty microwave for more than a minute or so can cause it to overheat and cause serious damage to the unit.
8. Inspect your unit. It only takes a moment to run your eyes over your microwave oven before hitting the start button. During a home inspection, I look for ill-fitting doors, damaged gaskets. corrosion on the interior surface, stains or discoloration that won’t wipe away, and similar issues. You can, too. What You Should Do If You Spot Damage On Your Microwave
If you notice rust or corrosion on your microwave door—even if it seems minor—here’s what I recommend:
- Stop using it immediately. Unplug the microwave and don’t use it until a qualified appliance technician evaluates it. The risk isn’t worth the convenience of reheating leftovers.
- Get a professional assessment. An appliance repair technician can determine whether the damage affects the shielding and if repair is possible. Sometimes minor rust can be sanded and treated with microwave-safe cavity paint. But often, the damage is too extensive – and the cost of repair may not be worth it.
- Consider replacement. Here’s the reality: microwaves aren’t expensive appliances anymore. You can get a quality replacement for a few hundred dollars. Compare that to the potential health and safety risks of using a compromised unit, and replacement usually makes the most sense.
For homebuyers: If you’re in the market for a home in Marquette, Escanaba, Ishpeming, or anywhere in the U.P., don’t skip checking kitchen appliances during your inspection. And if you show up for a viewing and notice heavy air freshener use in the kitchen, be curious. Sometimes sellers mask problems with pleasant scents.
